One of my favorite parts of traveling is diving into local wine cultures, especially in countries like Hungary that have unique native grape varietals and keep most of their best bottles within national borders.

Fun fact: Hungary only exports about 1/3 of its wine, so drinking it here feels a bit like unearthing a hidden treasure that you probably haven’t tasted before. If you’re looking to taste excellent Hungarian wine at its source, here are eight of the best wine bars to visit in Budapest.

1. Tasting Table Wine Cellar

Tasting Table by Taste Hungary is less of a traditional wine bar and more of an experience. I would go so far as to say this is the best wine tasting experience in Budapest. Located in an atmospheric cellar in the Palace District, this was one of the highlights of my trip to Budapest.

I booked an evening wine tasting and sampled eight different Hungarian wines while enjoying two delicious cheese and charcuterie platters loaded with Hungarian cheeses and cured meats. The very highly rated tasting was in English, making it super accessible, and it was a fun opportunity to meet and socialize (and get a little tipsy) with fellow travelers. 2. Doblo Wine Bar

Doblo is one of the best-known wine bars in Budapest, situated in the Jewish Quarter. With its dim lighting and rustic decor, it’s the kind of place where you feel instantly at home.

They have an extensive selection of Hungarian wines, including Tokaji (pronounced “toe-kye”), Hungary’s famous dessert wine, and a range of red and white options from boutique vineyards. Go for a wine tasting flight and let the friendly staff guide you through the flavors. Pair your tasting with one of their delicious cheese and charcuterie boards.

DiVino sits right in front of St. Stephen’s Basilica, making it a prime spot for people-watching. This wine bar has a modern, trendy vibe and showcases wines from Hungary’s next-generation winemakers.

If you’re interested in exploring wines from younger Hungarian vintners, this is your spot. Their patio is perfect for summer evenings, and I recommend trying something from the Eger region—ask for a Kékfrankos (pronounced “cake-fronk-kosh”) for a taste of one of Hungary’s top red grapes. Kadarka is a favorite among locals and has a relaxed, neighborhood feel. This Budapest wine bar offers a rotating selection of Hungarian wines, many of which are lesser-known varietals.

Palack serves a great selection of Hungarian wines by the glass, so it’s easy to try a few. I recommend grabbing a glass of rosé or a lighter red like Kadarka and settling in to watch the evening unfold. Palack has a warm, local vibe, making it a great option for a relaxed evening out. Kóstolom focuses on pairing food with wine, with a menu that emphasizes local, seasonal ingredients. The staff here is passionate about Hungary’s small wineries, and you can tell they put a lot of thought into their selections. They also have a large selection of international wines, but you’re in Budapest so I’d recommend sticking with the Hungarian wines.
