Why Google Fi Is THE BEST Phone Plan for International Travel

Six years ago, I made a decision that completely transformed the way I travel: I switched to Google Fi. So far I’ve used it in 29 countries on 5 different continents without any issues and I can’t recommend it highly enough. Google Fi works with any type of phone not just Google devices (I have an iPhone) and, in my experience, it’s absolutely the best U.S. based phone plan for international travelers.

If you’ve ever traveled abroad with a traditional U.S. phone plan and activated international data, you’ll definitely understand why Google Fi can be such a game-changer. Most carriers charge you $10 a day just to use your phone outside the U.S., and that’s on top of your regular monthly bill. Two weeks abroad? That’s $140 in roaming fees alone, plus your usual monthly bill. It adds up very quickly.

Even if you only take one or two international trips a year, those fees can double or triple your usual monthly fees. And don’t get me started on the hassle of switching SIM cards in different countries, getting eSIMs to cooperate, or worrying if you’ll exceed the data limit and be hit with additional fees. I tried using eSIMs on a recent trip to Morocco as an experiment for blogging purposes and the network service was terrible and slow and it cost as much as my monthly Google Fi plan. In other words, not worth it.

With Google Fi, the costs are straightforward, your data works exactly the same abroad as it does at home, and you’re covered worldwide without any extra charges. IMHO Google Fi is THE best phone plan for international travel, hands down.

As someone who relies heavily on my iPhone for GPS navigation, whether I’m driving in rural Ireland, walking the streets of Prague, or figuring out the U-Bahn in Vienna, that unlimited data has been a lifesaver. Navigating eats up a lot of data fast, but with Fi, I’ve never had to worry about running out or being hit with surprise fees.

Yes, I might sound like an infomercial, but I’m not just trying to sell you on this. I’ve looked and I cannot find a better plan out there for international travel.

• Unlimited Standard: A nice middle ground. Enough data for most folks, a decent hotspot allowance, and North America roaming.
• Unlimited Premium: For digital nomads, frequent international travelers, or people whose idea of downtime is streaming HD video on three devices from a hammock in Croatia.

As a side note, it was very easy to switch my existing phone number over to Google Fi from Verizon and the Google Fi app is straightforward and makes managing your plan very simple.
