Northern Lights Ranch Review: Cozy Cabins and Epic Night Skies

Welcome to Northern Lights Ranch, a place where Scandinavian luxury meets the raw beauty of Lapland, and where the toughest part of your day might just be the mad dash from your private hot tub to your cabin in sub-zero temps. Equal parts adventure and tranquility, this spot guarantees a memorable stay, aurora or no aurora. I spent three nights there in February 2022, and here’s my honest review of Northern Lights Ranch.

Location & Getting There

Northern Lights Ranch is about a 20-minute drive north of central Sirkka (aka Levi), which is far enough to feel like you’ve entered a serene, snow-globe universe but close enough to civilization that you can stock up on snacks or thermal socks if you need to. If you’re flying into Kittilä Airport (KTT) it’s an easy 30-minute drive. If you didn’t rent a car, the hotel offers a shuttle service from central Levi, though you’ll need to arrange that with the hotel in advance.

Best Time to Visit

The northern lights season in Finnish Lapland is impressively long, running from September to April. For that true winter-wonderland vibe—picture snow-covered trees and a landscape straight out of a snow globe—December through March is ideal. This is also prime time for activities like skiing, snowshoeing, or warming up around an outdoor fire after a day exploring the Arctic. If you’re after a bit more daylight while still catching the aurora, aim for February or March.

Not a fan of the cold? Consider visiting between September and November. Autumn in Lapland is all about vibrant fall colors, and the aurora is still very much in the cards. Plus, early autumn is easier on the wallet, and you won’t need to sprint to the hot tub quite as quickly when it’s only brisk, not freezing.

The Cabins: Cozy Glass Retreats

Now, let’s talk cabins—because they’re the real showstoppers at Northern Lights Ranch. Think sleek Scandinavian design, soft neutral tones, and huge glass walls that let you stargaze from the comfort of your bed. Oh, and that bed? It’s motorized, so you can tilt it for optimal aurora viewing. Fancy.

Inside, you’ll find all the essentials for staying cozy in sub-zero temps without giving up an ounce of style. There’s a bathroom stocked with toiletries, a robe, and slippers, plus a kitchenette complete with a mini fridge, mini bar, coffee maker, and tea kettle. A seating area gives you space to lounge with a hot drink, and some cabins even come with a small couch and TV for ultimate chill vibes. At the entrance, there’s a heated mudroom for snowy gear—a little detail that makes a big difference when it comes to keeping your cabin clean and puddle-free.

If you can swing it, splurge on a cabin with a private hot tub. Trust me, it’s worth it. My cabin had one, and let me tell you, the dash from the door to the tub in a bathrobe and slippers is an adventure. Once you’re soaking in the steaming water, drink in hand, with the cold air swirling around you and maybe even a hint of the Northern Lights overhead, it’s pure magic. Getting out? Less magical. But still 100% worth it.

When it comes to food, Northern Lights Ranch doesn’t disappoint. I opted for the half-board option, which includes breakfast and dinner at the on-site restaurant. Breakfast is a classic buffet setup, with enough variety to fuel a day in the snow. Dinner, though, is where they really shine. The menu focuses on seasonal, local ingredients—think reindeer, Arctic char, and other regional specialties—served in a cozy dining room complete with a roaring fireplace.

The reindeer was a standout for me, though I’ll admit it felt a little strange at first, given how often you see them wandering outside. But hey, when in Lapland…

Reindeer Feeding Before Breakfast

One of the most delightful moments of my stay was feeding the resident reindeer before breakfast. A handful of young, curious reindeer live in a fenced area just outside the restaurant’s floor-to-ceiling windows, and they’ve clearly got their morning routine down to a science. Each day, a bucket of lichen (the moss they eat) is placed just inside the restaurant door, and the reindeer wait eagerly for their turn to snack. Hand-feeding them was such a unique experience—gentle nibbles, soft noses, and yes, a fair amount of reindeer slobber. It was the first and only time I’ve ever had to wash reindeer slobber off of my hands before heading in for your breakfast, and I’m not complaining!

The Northern Lights: My 4 AM Wake-Up Call

While the reindeer were a highlight, it was the middle-of-the-night aurora that truly defined my stay. After spending over a week in Lapland without catching a proper Northern Lights display, I had started to lower my expectations. Then, on my second-to-last night, I woke up at 4 AM and glanced through the glass ceiling above my bed. What I saw looked like faint jet contrails crisscrossing the sky. Still groggy, it took me a moment to realize, “Wait, there aren’t five planes flying over the Arctic… it’s happening!”

I scrambled into my winter gear faster than I ever thought possible and rushed outside into the still, silent night. For the next 45 minutes, I stood in awe as the Northern Lights grew stronger, swirling and dancing across the sky. The snow-covered landscape was so quiet, I could hear my own breath as I watched the show unfold. It was one of those rare, dreamlike moments that make frozen fingers and interrupted sleep feel completely insignificant.

For a fun dose of winter whimsy, try out the little ice-skating rink on the property. Whether you’re channeling your inner Olympic figure skater or just focused on staying upright (ahem, me), it’s a fun way to spend an hour until your toes freeze.

If you’re up for something more adventurous, grab the complimentary snowshoes and hit the trails. I did a lot of snowshoeing on this trip, and let’s just say it’s an excellent way to explore the Arctic landscape while working off that breakfast buffet.

And, of course, it wouldn’t be Finland without saunas. Some cabins include private saunas, but if yours doesn’t, you can rent a standalone one to enjoy the full Finnish sauna experience. The “proper” Finnish way to sauna involves sitting in the sauna until you’re unbearably hot, then running outside to roll around in the snow like a human snowball. It sounds a little wild, but it’s oddly exhilarating and incredibly refreshing. (I was a skeptic until I tried it myself!)

For something truly unique, Northern Lights Ranch also doubles as a wedding venue. If tying the knot in a winter wonderland is your dream, you’ll love their wedding chapel, which is made entirely of ice and snow and rebuilt every winter.

Pros and Cons

No place is perfect, but Northern Lights Ranch comes pretty close. Here’s a quick rundown of what to love and what to keep in mind:

• Location: Remote enough to feel serene and secluded, yet still close enough to town for convenience (about a 20 minute drive). The hotel does have a shuttle available though you need to arrange in advance.
• Northern Lights: All cabins come with glass ceilings, so you can watch for the aurora or just stargaze without leaving the comfort of your bed.
• Cozy Cabins: Radiant floor heating, private hot tubs, and saunas make it easy to stay warm and comfortable, no matter the weather.
• Winter Wonderland: Snowshoe trails, an ice-skating rink, and endless opportunities for winter fun.
• Reindeer: Did I mention you get to feed young reindeer at breakfast? I mean, come on.

Cons:

• Isolation: While the remoteness adds to the charm, it might feel a little too quiet or far from the action for some travelers.

Instead of trying to crown a winner, I’ve put together a breakdown of their pros and cons to help you decide which one suits your ideal winter escape.

• Aurora Ambiance: Igloo vs. Cabin
  Levin Iglut delivers that iconic igloo experience you’ve probably seen all over Instagram—essentially, a sleek, futuristic snow globe in the heart of Lapland. Northern Lights Ranch skips the igloo concept in favor of chic glass-walled cabins with forest views and glass ceilings. While the vibes are different, both give you unobstructed views of the aurora from the comfort of your bed.
• Space to Stretch Out
  If size matters, Levin Iglut might have a slight edge, thanks to the igloo’s dome structure and its impressively high ceiling at the center. Northern Lights Ranch cabins are cozier by design, with a more traditional cabin layout. That said, both offer plenty of space to unwind—whether you’re snuggled up with a book or gazing up at the Arctic night sky.
• Foodies Rejoice
  No matter which spot you choose, you’ll eat well. Both places offer thoughtfully prepared meals highlighting local, seasonal ingredients, from reindeer (yes, it’s delicious) to fresh Arctic char. Whether it’s a hearty breakfast or a sophisticated dinner, you’ll leave the table satisfied. Let’s call this one a draw.
• Reindeer Encounters
  If interacting with reindeer is high on your wish list, Northern Lights Ranch is the clear winner. Their resident reindeer roam right near the restaurant, and you can even feed them lichen before heading inside for breakfast. Levin Iglut is charming in many ways, but unfortunately, it doesn’t come with its own reindeer friends.
• Location, Location
  Levin Iglut scores points for convenience. It’s about 10 minutes from Levi’s town center, making it a better choice if you plan to hit the slopes or check out local attractions. Northern Lights Ranch, by contrast, is more remote. While that adds to its serene, off-the-grid vibe, it’s worth noting they offer a free shuttle to town if you don’t have a car.
• Light Pollution (or Lack Thereof)
  One of the perks of Northern Lights Ranch being farther from town is the complete absence of light pollution. When the aurora is out, the view is pristine and undisturbed. Levin Iglut still offers excellent aurora watching, but you might notice some ambient light from the nearby ski resort, depending on your igloo’s orientation.
• Scenery: Hilltop or Forest
  When it comes to views, it’s a matter of preference. Levin Iglut is perched on a hill, offering sweeping panoramas of the surrounding landscape. Northern Lights Ranch trades that for tranquil forest scenery, which feels more secluded and intimate. In the end, it really depends on what you’re after. You really can’t go wrong either way.
