The Prunksaal, or State Hall, is the library’s pièce de résistance. It’s a baroque extravaganza designed by architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach. It houses over 200,000 volumes, including rare manuscripts, ancient globes, and enough leather-bound tomes to make Belle from Beauty and the Beast faint. Over the centuries, it has grown into one of Europe’s most important libraries, preserving treasures like medieval manuscripts, maps, and early printed books.
How to Get There & When to Visit
The Austrian National Library is right in the heart of Vienna, in the Hofburg Palace complex. It’s a short walk from the Albertina or St. Stephen’s Cathedral.

- Hours: Open daily, typically from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM (check their website for updates, especially on holidays). Get there right when it opens if you want a few minutes to take photos without the crowds. I visited in October, and when I arrived 15 minutes after it opened and there were only about 15 people in the Prunksaal, though it filled up quickly.
